MATCH RESULTS - 3rd JUNE
lst Grade 13 vs. West Torrens 3

Tries scored by K. Jones, R. Wilson, G. Raymond 1 penalty and 1 conversion. Old Collegians lst XV continued on its winning way, up to fourth position on the ladder. In a tough first half both teams tested each other in a dour struggle to be 3-3 at half time.

The second half got under way with Collegians camping in West Torrens' defensive quarter, despite being under intense pressure in the scrums. This territorial advantage was brought about by the persistent solid effort by the forward pack, assisted by urgent committed tackling by our backs.

Finally, under great pressure, the West Torrens' defence crumbled after 25 minutes. when a forward rush led by Rymill, Stark and Hayden.committed the Torrens backs; then with quick second phase ball, Kevin Jones steamrolled his way to the corner to break the deadlock.

Tactical kicking by both Raymond and replacement half, Hopkinson, kept the territorial advantage against the opposition. A towering up and under by Raymond saw our backs put tremendous pressure on the Torrens' winger, who misjudged the catch and the ever-present Wilson gathered to touch down under the posts.

The west Torrens players would have been pleased to hear the final whistle, because it was apparent the longer the game progressed, the more dominant O.C.1s were becoming. In the end, the consistent effort and toiling by the forward pack paved the way,for our backs to capitalise with the crowd-pleasing finishing that they are capable of.

Congratulations to both teams for an entertaining encounter that was both tough and committed.

2nd Grade 56 vs. West Torrens 0

Tries scored by Short 3, Hopkinson 2, Szuster 1,Naylor 1, Douglas 1, McCarten 1, Lithgow 1. Conversions - Szuster 5 and Douglas 1. 15 played 13. The forwards were dominant and the backs enjoyed a feast of ball. The score was restricted by poor passing by the inside backs, the ball should have been run wide more often. Still the game was in the bag with the score 22-0 at half time. There was no slackening of efforts in the second half and the score was of academic interest only -this team needs a challenge to show how good it really is.

3rd Grade 0 vs. Roseworthy 16

Roseworthy try in the opening minutes - missed tackles (4-0)
Old Collegians territorial advantage was not converted into points despite many strong attacking moves. This was mainly due to tight defence by the Roseworthy backs and loose forwards.

Improved tackling by O.C.'s backs in the second half - pressure from both sides leading to handling errors. Some intelligent kicking by Peter Hawker in the second half saw O.C.'s in a strong attacking position however pressure was not converted into points.

Second try to Roseworthy late in the second half again due to some poor defence. Try converted (10-0). Roseworthy controlled the play from then on with only some last line tackling saving further points to Roseworthy. Sustained Roseworthy pressure saw their No. 8 score under the posts - converted 16-0. Roseworthy's straight running and support play dominated the second half.

Casino 22 vs. Port Adelaide 0

Tries scored by Trevor Phipps, Mata Vanna, and Mike Marshall 3 tries and 1 conversion.

Under 15's 8 vs. Brighton 8

Tries scored by Toby Hill and Ashley Nurick. Great to see the Under 15s tip to full strength. We led throughout the game but unfortunately Brighton managed to score in the last 5 minutes, drawing the score. However very well played Under 15's!

Under 11's 16 vs. Waratah 12

Tries scored by R. Longstaff 2, James Walker 1 and B. Harrison 1. Courage award - Ali Farouque, technique award - Robert Longstaff and Imagination award - Brendan Ryan. First win of the season - well done boys!

Under 9's 0 vs. Waratah 36

Waratahs had a strong tackling, running team, Collegians tackled hard and scrummaged well - lots of good individual efforts but we are not really playing as a team. We tend to let one person run and not support. Nevertheless a good effort against tough opposition. Welcome to our new player Jonathon Kenny.

LAST SATURDAY'S MATCH RESULTS - 10th JUNE

1st Grade 39 vs. Elizabeth 12

Tries scored by Borzi 2, Sadler 1, Hopkinson 1, Compton 2, Kyriacou 1, Raymond - 4 conversions and 1 penalty. Great to watch TEAM rugby.

Collegians in the first half played a fantastic attacking game and scored the majority of their points by being dominant in every phase of the game, which gives us a big lead up to the game against Burnside next week. However, in the second half Collegians appeared to be coasting a little and a bigger effort was apparent by Elizabeth. It was an excellent game to watch by the supporters who braved freezing conditions out at Elizabeth.

3rd Grade 30 vs. Onkaparinga 16

For the third week in a row the 3rds were at "picturesque" Bailey -oops sorry, Rugby Union Park. The weather ranged from beautiful one moment, p g down the next. It was a bit confusing before the match as no-one seemed certain who was going to turn up. A quick call to Cushing to turn up as hooker, but fortunately Jessie made it - I think Chris owes him a couple of pints.

Anyway, positions sorted and the fighting 3rds trot on. Having lost the past 2 matches on this lovely ground they were determined to change that now. Within a few minutes Nick Porter went over for a good try and James Bradshaw converted 6-0. This was closely followed by another try from Nick, but no conversion 10-0. In this early part of the match the forwards were working well together, particularly in the loose, but there were a few handling mis- takes in the backs.

About 15 minutes into the match, Peter Hawker went over for a try which James converted 16-0. The efforts must have been a bit too much for Peter as he needed a good rub-down on the side- line.
While he was being tended to Onkas went over for a try but did not convert 16-4. Dennis Hay obviously enjoyed his game and he was also enjoying a discussion with the opposition regarding their sexual preferences. The first half came to a close. Generally the forwards were playing well, the Porter brothers and Dean Earle driving forward at every opportunity and the whole pack supporting well. The backs had their moments but a few ball handling errors let them down.

10 minutes into the second half Onkals scored another try, virtually under our scrum and a good kick went over for a conversion 16-10. Shortly afterwards our forwards were on the rampage again. A penetrating run from Dean, then good handling across the ground finally to James Bradshaw for a try. He did not convert his own try. 20-10. The next 16 minutes saw us under a lot of pressure and there was a certain amount of spite shown on both sides. Then a clever run from Greg Watkins with Peter Walmsley in support took the pressure off. Between them they went 3/4s of the pitch finishing with Peter going over for a try. No conversion 24-10.

Shortly afterwards, again after good forward work, Oliver Porter scored a try, converted by James 30-10. Itseemed that this would be the final score but pressure from Onkas caused us to give away a penalty try and of course a conversion

Tries Scored by Rarechieh, Ferris and MeDonald. A good effort on our, first wet game. We will improve..

4th Grade 10 vs. Southern Suburbs 4

We capitalised on the climatic conditions, scored 2 tries in the first half - one converted by Dirk Klynsmith. The team defended well to keep Southern Suburbs to one score in the second half to win 10-4. We were unable to publish last week's result of this team (1) but with the return of Chris Jaeger and Alex Copeland from interstate 

Under-15's  OCs 0 vs Port Adelaide 32

A disappointing effort by the Under 15s, who are capable of far better rugby. Too many individuals on the field and not enough team cohesion.

Under 13's 14 vs. Elizabeth 12

Good tackling would have won the game by at least 10 points; escaped with a lucky victory. We did not play to our full potential. Tries Daniel, Tom Rossiter, penalty try Stewart Douglas, Ben Gray conversion.

Under 11's 4 vs. Port Adelaide 16

Try scored by Robert.

Under 9s 16 vs. Brighton 32

Tries scored by Chris Young 2, Alex Waddicor 1 and Jonathon Kenny 1. Three tries each at half time - Collegians played well with good tackling and running. Brighton's experience won out in the end. However Collegians played with spirit. It was a much improved effort especially picking up the ball in the loose. Well played everybody!

NEW COLLEGIANS MEAN BUSINESS
A message from the Coaching Director, Michael von Berg

At tne end of the first round and due in some instances to good management and in others, good luck we're doing well; and we have the potential to keep it up. In the second round I believe we should all strive to be as high up the ladder as we possibly can -that must be our objective.
I thank the players, the officials and the supporters for the enormous encouragement that they have given. The only way that we are going to be serious contenders in the serious end of the business, i.e. finals, is to get serious in training and attitude. We are playing entertaining, sparkling, exciting, enjoyable and winning rugby. This can only improve with more positive attitude. Let's work on our motto - NEW COLLEGIANS MEAN BUSINESS

UNDER 19s - Report from our President, John Davies

We have sore 20 players in this age group and make the fourth side in the Under 19 Competition. The fact that we managed to raise a team probably saved this Competition, which was in danger of folding because of lack of support. It has been a considerable effort to put this group together, both emotionally and physically, but this team, along with the Under 17's, could provide the new players we will badly need in the next few years.

The present Under 19 team will find it difficult to win games this season because there are a number of young, inexperienced players in critical positions.

Our aims have been to improve each game, both as individuals and as a team. The spirit of the team has been tremendous and despite being outgunned in severa games, they have never given in. There are a number of very good players who will move up into senior rugby next year, but most of the team will be available for this age group again next year - when they will win games.

Four players.have made the Under 19 squad to tour New Zealand
Andrew O'Grady, Vaughan Strawbridge, Neal Hobson and Glen Wattling. (The last two are West Torrens players who will return to play senior rugby with their club next season.)
These four, along with Robin Caldwell, also toured to Newcastle with the state side earlier in the season. Congratulations to them all!

The Club would be foolish to ignore the Under 19 and Under 17 age groups; we do need older members and players to get involved.  This is our future - please show interest!

LAST SATURDAY'S RESULTS

1st Grade 25 vs. University 6

Tries were scored by Beaufill 1, Stark 1, Kenny 1, Graham Raymond - 1 Try, 1 Conversion, and 1 Penalty.
Excellent game, best players - Rymill, Humble and Stark.

2nd Grade 14 vs. University 0

Tries -scored by M. Raymond, M. Cobb and A. Millar, field goal -N. Szuster. A scrappy game, forwards lacked cohesion (especially in the first half) and drive, backs received a lot of bad ball. Score very flattering.

3rd Grade 8 vs. Southern Suburbs 12

Well, there we were, sitting in the sun at picturesque Bailey Reserve awaiting battle between the probable grand finalists in this year's Third Grade. The last meeting was of course last year's Grand Final which gave us the cup. Souths obviously had this in mind and made the most of a slightly disorganised start by our guys. culminating in a try by them only 3 minutes into the game (the first team this season to score points against us - bang goes our goal average of infinity). They missed the conversion - 0-4. We missed a penalty shortly afterwards. The only opportunity we really had was when our forwards rushed a free kick taking them by surprise. Only good tackling by Souths kept us out. The first half was marred by a lack of cohesion in the forward pack, set scrums and by lineouts not working to our advantage.

The second half started in a similar vein. Souths scored another try and missed the conversion 0-8. The last 15 minutes were very exciting. Peter Walmsley scored a lovely try after good ball handling from the backs, Souths came back and scored another try and then Oliver Porter crashed over for us, leaving a final score of 8-12. There was some good tackling and the forwards were certainly tighter in the second half. It was a shame to lose our winning streak but it will be back. Wicked Welsh Wit - "If you're seeing double, catch both balls!"

Casino 31 vs. Onkaparinga 8

Tries scored by Tony Rarechie, Simon Best, Paul Sherratt and Trevor Phipps, Mike Marshall - 2 tries, 2 conversions and 1 penalty. An exciting high try scoring game, the team is improving with every game.

4th Grade 0 vs. Brighton 12

We need to win more lineout ball, the team is lacking in technique but the commitment is one hundred per cent.

Under 15s vs. Onkaparinga 20

Field Goal - Marc Fullager. Due to injury/illness we were only able to field 11 players, who performed extremly well under the circumstances

Under 13s 16 vs. Port Adelaide 24

Try scorers Stuart Douglas - 2 and Daniel Holden - 1. Ben Gray -2 conversions. Port Adelaide had three six footers in their side but our boys never gave up. Some excellent tackling by our newcomer "Kenneth".

Under 11s 0 vs. Onkaparinga 48

Under 9s 4 vs. Port Adelaide.40

Try scored by Brock James. We played very well in the first half against a strong Port side. There was some good passing and good tackling. Unfortunately we ran out of steam in the 2nd half.
