1st XV vs Woodville
A.F. Nielson Memorial Cup Final
From the Old Collegians Rugby News
by James Diack
From the Touchline
"Once again Old Collegians failed before the T.V. cameras, being
downed 15-9 by Woodville in the final of the A.F. Nielson Memorial Cup competition.
The first half began reasonably well for Collegians when Adrian scored a penalty goal, and
U thought they would go on to win this match easily, but this was not to be.
Woodville equalised the score with an easily scored try, and by half time were leading
9-3.
The second half went much the same with Woodville scoring a further 6 points, and Old
Collegians a try and penalty goal.
Commenting on the game in general, I would say that the forwards were evenly matched in
scrums and line-outs, but inspeed and backing up Woodville outclassed Collegians easily.
Breusch gave the backs many chances but was let down very badly. They were
shocking, and with the exception of Marsh and McQualter lost almost every scoring chance.
Dropped passes were dominent by one or two people and cannot be excused.
Woodville's tackling was very good, which is more than can be said for Collegians.
Keith Breusch was certainly the best player for Collegians while Bruce McQualter and Ian
Marsh were the best of the other backs. For the forwards Don Watkin and Evans
played well, and Warren Bully turned in another good game.
In the next match Old Collegians meet University, and unless a drastic improvement is
made, they will find it hard to win.
Lastly a word of congratulations to Sid Feldheim and the rest of the Thirds for defeating
Elizabeth seconds. A fine effort."
