UNDER 10s
(scores measured in number of tries scored)
19 July OC 1 v Brighton 11
It was basically Brighton playing against themselves, as we only
had 2 Old Colls players playing (end of school holidays) !! Everyone
played in good spirit, & had fun.
26 July Vikings 9 v OC 6
We only had 6 players, borrowed 2 Viking players & played 8
aside. Some terrific support from Bill Meegan during the course of the
match, mainly supporting Darren. A good match from everyone, but we really
do need to reconcentrate on tackling lower!! A brilliant run down the
whole of the pitch from Nick Bell, scoring a try. Tries: Darren 3, Nick
1
2 August OC 5 v Southern Suburbs 3
It was tremendous to have had 9 Old Colls players on the field. Bridget
McCarten has joined the U10's ---"she wants to tackle", says her
father Danny!! So we borrowed a Southern Suburb player to even up the
teams to make it 10 each. It was a truly exciting fast match. Some
terrific work & tackling on the field by Darren Pinkerton, Nick
Catterway, Nick Bell, Bill Meegan. Tries: Darren 1. Encouragement award
went to a deserved D'Arcy Sadler, who played with heart.
9 August Onka's 11 v OC 6
Although we lost, it was another exciting match. Some fabulous play by the
team. D'Arcy made an awesome sprint down the pitch to get her first try
for the season. Even the Onka's people were impressed. As we didn't have
Darren Pinkerton playing due to illness, Bill Meegan played halfback,
& was just everywhere on the field, scoring 3 tries. Chester too took
the initiative by throwing his body on the ball when it was loose over the
try line. Well done. Again, a terrific try by Nick Bell, who with
determination took the ball over the line. Nick Catterway tacked at every
opportunity, & in general the team supported each other. The team
played with spirit.
16 August Burnside 5 v OC 4
I think the score shows that it was a close & exciting match. We used
5 of Burnside's players to make up an 11 aside game. Some terrific
tackling by Darren, Nick Bell, & great defence by all of the team.
Everyone played well. Tries: Darren Pinkerton 2
23 August Brighton 3 v OC 5
We won!! This was a very exciting match! All of the U10's were fired up
& hustled & bustled in the mauls, winning them, Tom really getting
into the mauls now, & terrific driving by all of the team. They put
what they'd learnt at training. Terrific tacking by Bill & Darren.
Both D'Arcy & Nick Bell again sprinted down the pitch to score a try.
Darren scored 3 wonderful tries. Great support from Chester & Sam too.
The encouragement award went to Nick Chatterway. His support was terrific,
& he put pressure on the other team.
30 August OC 5 v Vikings 13 We played on about a quarter
of a pitch size, as we'd had heavy rain. We lost, but put up a strong
defence. Tom Stevens really got into all of the mauls, & we did so
well as a team with our mauls & great driving by Chester Armstrong
& Nick Bell, it was terrific to see them all in action. Nick
Chatterway was also always there for support & defence. Bill Meegan
covered so much of the field & put a lot of pressure on the other team
too. Not as many tackles as we usually do in a match, but there were some
good ones made of course from Darren Pinkerton. Tries scored, 2 to Darren,
2 to Bill & 1 to Nick Chatterway. Captain for the match was D'Arcy.
Note from Janet Penhall:
This was my final match with the juniors, as I've "hung up my
boots". It was a sad goodbye to them all. I am unable to make the
Junior Presentation Day on the 19th October (I will be in Qld at my
parents 50th Wedding Anniversary). A huge thanks once again to all of the
parents that helped & supported me over the season, & last but not
least, Viv Fullager, who has been such a wonderful help each Wednesday
night.
UNDER 14s
19 July - OC 24 v Brighton 5
A first half blitz by the Tregenza boys left the Tigers floundering. Kabil
set the scene with two early tries. Alex and Rowan followed up with one a
piece. With two tries converted Brighton were looking down the barrel at
24 – nil. With the sting taken out of the match the second half was more
of an even struggle with the Tigers managing to claw back one un-converted
try to finish 5 – 24 adrift. In the end OC’s forwards Vince, Alex,
Andrew and best on ground James Marshall, controlled the game and made
life easy for the hard running OC backs. Jack Biggs also had a fine
game on the right wing.
26 July – Brighton Maulers 24 v OC 17
We had been trounced by them in the Round 1 and this would see how far we
have come! The build up had been intense with training up’ed to three
times in the week leading up to the game. As expected the Maulers were big
and well organised. Even though OC’s were doing it hard in the scrum and
the backs seeing precious little of the ball the team managed to hold
their own in general play during the early encounters. In fact OC’s
scored first when some slick mid field passing allowed Kabil to evade the
wide defence. The Maulers hit back quickly and then added another soft try
when our defence got lost in the in-goal. A third try before half time
gave Brighton a 17 to 7 lead. The intensity of the Maulers pack waned
(slightly) in the second half and Alex scored a excellent try but was
unable to convert. A further try to Kabil and, unexpectedly to all but the
OC U14 faithful, the scores were even. When Will Sadler received a heavy
head-high hit 8 meters short of the line the chance to take the lead was
there. Alas the Tregenza boys opted to take the ball straight up and could
not crash through the Maulers forward beef. The Maulers held their form
and went on to score a converted try to take the game 24 – 17. On the
day it was a tough workout for forwards Tom Nutt, Jason, Andrew and James
who all did well.
2 August – OC 7 v Brighton Maulers 17
The vagaries of the draw gave OC’s the chance at avenge their loss to
Brighton Maulers the previous week. The challenge was there to see what
had be learnt. The first half was an even hard fought affair with OC’s
again struggling to match up in the scrums, but the second rowers Tom
Northcott and James Marshall and the three quarters defending stoutly.
Brighton’s power got them a try, and with a excellent conversion, and a
7 – nil lead at half time. An early second half try to the Maulers made
scoring imperative and Alex obliged. A late tackle reduced Brighton by one
and at 12 – 7 there was still a chance. There was plenty of pressure as
some of our pocket sized players, Chris Chattaway and Jack Biggs, will
attest, but they like their team mates showed terrific courage. But when
Brighton crossed the line again OC’s could not get back. The game ended
Maulers 17, OC’s 7. All in all a better more organised performance than
the previous week and no disgrace, but still the opportunity is there to
improve.
9 August Onkas 14 v OC 27
With two losses on the trot a win against Onkas was important to secure
second spot on the ladder. Battle hardened from the Brighton Maulers
encounters and remembering the loss to Onkas last time, there was a
certain trepidation in the supporters camp. After the initial forays Rowan
broke the defensive line on half way, jinked around the full back and
scored wide of the posts. From the restart good ruck work and clean out
released Rowan again who out paced the mid field defence and drew the full
back before slipping the pass for Kabil to cross the line. Onkas struck
back just on half time with a push over try, which they converted. At 10
– 7 it was game on. All that extra training paid off in the second half
when our superior fitness and pace told. The forwards maintained a high
level of intensity with the result that Will scored a well deserved try,
as did the ubiquitous Kabil. Rowan rounded off a great game by crossing
the line wide and running around to touch down under the post, then
smacking over the conversion. So second spot was secured with a 27 – 14
win. This was a great team performance with all 19 (!) players
contributing wonderfully.
UNDER 16s
27 July - OC 34 v Vikings 10
A great win. Hard game where the team’s training and positive attitude
proved successful. Andrew Giles and Oliver Greenwell both scored tries
with excellent support from Henry Boylan and Sam O’Connell. The front
row were able to gain many possessions and were able to control several
rolling mauls.
2 August OC 20 v Elizabeth 0
Excellent game and a well deserved win. A hard start saw a fantastic run
from Guy Barrett to get first score on the board. The team lifted to show
determined defence and a move forward to score again. Scorers: Nutt 1,
Giles 1, Barrett 1, Kenny 1 16 August OC 7 v Burnside 5 A great win in
this hard fought game - great defence. The best maul took 30 metres or
more. Many moves were applied with success. Josh DeCaen followed up well,
Tom Collett kicked excellently for goal, Oliver Greenwell ran well and
Simon Kenny showed tremendous heart. Scorers: DeCaen 1, Collett 2.
23 August Brighton 34 v OC 0 Kane Smith was very
courageous in tackling. Most scrums were won by Old Colls. Simon Kenny and
Henry Boylan made good runs. Great heart and good plays, but alas no win
this time. Scorers: Giles 3, Greenwell 2, Bulla 1
30 August OC 43 v Vikings 19 A scrappy game, which is
disappointing. The second half improved with Kenny and O’Connell setting
an example for the team. Great tackling by Shepperd and Shimmield. Andrew
Giles again proved to be a talented centre and had several winning tries.
Rory Shepperd’s enthusiasm and determination was inspirational. The
front row worked well winning several scrums. Scorers: Giles 4, Kenny 2,
Greenwell 1 Thanks to Janet Penhall (U10s Coach) and Doug Mein (U14s
Manager) and Geoff Lucas (U16s Manager) for the above reports.
June 2003
UNDER 10s
All results measured in tries scored
15 June – Southern Suburbs (5) v Old Collegians (4) - One of Southern
tries should have been disallowed as their player didn't pass the ball in
their lineout (as required by U10 rules) & then scored the try!! Nick
Chatterway almost scored a try, but put his foot over the sideline next to
the try line - Bad luck!! Overall the team played very well. Had a good
2nd half. The team is learning to spread out better & position
themselves better on the field. Some excellent tackles, D'Arcy, Bill,
Darren, Stuart, to name a few. Bill received the encouragement award, he
had a great game.
21 June – Old Collegians (4) v Onkaparinga (5) - The tries for Old
Collegians were 2 from Bill Meagan, & 1 each to Darren Pinkerton,
& Nick Bell. Captain was Stuart Nott. This game was rather exciting,
lots of rucks, of which we won about 50%, most of the Onka's players were
off side in every ruck, but as we had no official ref, it was hard to
control seeing the Onka's coach was reffing! Nick Bell scored a great try,
first for the season. Bill Meagan was just everywhere on the field.
Everyone needs to have more focus on supporting their team mates. Chester
Armstrong got the encouragement award. He showed heart in this match.
28 June – Burnside (8) v Old Collegians (7) - Only had 6 Old Cols
players, due to illness, borrowed 7 Burnside players (they have an
abundance of players), & we played a 11 a side match. Was a fast &
exciting match, some thought went into some of the moves & enabled
tries to be scored. Bill Meegan scored 3 tries, Darren Pinkerton 2, &
2 of the Burnside team Mack & Michael scored the other 2. Tom Stevens
got the encouragement award.
5 July - U10 sprint competition (held at half time at the State match
at Woodville) - Bill Meegan qualified as our fastest runner in U10's and
represented Old Collegians in the sprint.
UNDER 14s
31 May – Old Collegians (29) v Souths/Vikings (17) - It started as a
fairly even struggle but the Tregenza boys started to dominate towards the
end of the first half going in 12 to 5 at the break thanks to tries from
Kabil and Bulla (Alex). OC’s forwards set a strong platform and gained
excellent field position as the second half developed and OC scored again
via Robbie Bell, Kabil and Alex. Souths responded well and scored two
tries themselves early in the second half, putting the pressure on.
However Souths cause was not helped when they had two sent off, including
their hard running centre, half way through the second half and in the end
they could not head OC’s.
12 June – Souths/Vikings (5) v Old Collegians (46) - After the weeks
break OC’s backup against Souths/Vikings, this time at Bailey. Again OC’s
dominated the game through great commitment from the forward and excellent
ball retention and use. The efforts of Carl, Vince, and Andrew were well
rewarded when Kabil score a hat trick in the first half; Alex also added
one, and OC’s found themselves 22 – 5 up at the break. Unlike the
previous week Souths could not break down OC’s forwards. And once again
emotion got the better of one of the Souths players who sat out the
remainder of the game in the sin-bin. Like the first half OC’s scored 4
tries, one to Will Sadler who had a good game, and three to Bulla. The
result was a resounding 46 – 5 win.
21 June – Old Collegians (10) v Onkaparinga (17) - OC’s had easily
accounted for Onkas in Round 2, but this time it was a different story. In
a gripping game, played in a great spirit, a physically imposing Onkas mid
field posed many question for us. OC’s scrum was under pressure early as
well, as the boys struggle to come to grips with a well drilled Onkas
pack. To the credit of OC’s pack they hung in well and improved as the
first half developed. With the score at 12 – 10 to Onkas early in the
second half the game continued to enthral the vocal crowd as it ebbed and
flowed. Alas, OC’s could not capitalise on the few half chances that
they were able to graft out and Onkas very impressive outside centre
scored late in the game to leave OC’s 17 – 10 adrift at the final
whistle. Pleasing to say that there was no disgrace in this result.
28 June – Old Collegians (34) v Burnside (21) - OC’s entertained
neighbours Burnside in round 7. The previous encounter had been an
entertaining affair and the same was expected this time. Burnside however
were missing a couple of key players due, apparently, to a request for
them to attend school on Saturday morning – yes you guess right Saturday
detention. The Tregenza boys took advantage and totally dominated the
first half running in five tries to lead 27 – nil at half time. To the
credit of the Burnside lads they fought back well after the restart, and
even though their reinforcements arrived during the second half and
clearly put some power into their performance, the game was over when
Rowan chipped off OC’s line, got a kind bounce on the follow through and
streaked the length of the paddock to score his second try. Tries also to
Alex, Carl, Robbie, and Kabil. New boy James was the best of the forwards.
The final score line was 34 – 21.
Thanks to Janet Penhall (U10s Coach) and Doug Mein (U14s Manager) for
the above reports.
May 2003
Under 8s
3 May OC 4 v Souths 3 (measured in tries scored)
Under 10s
3 May OC 1 v Souths 9 (measured in tries scored).
This score looks rather misleading really as Southern Suburbs played with
10 players to our 7 for most of the duration of the match. The Old Cols
U10's only have 8 players, & we were 2 down Saturday, so we borrowed a
player from Southern. Old Cols played very well. Some amazing tackles from
Darren, who also scored our try. Nick Chatterway shows no fears, &
great work by D'Arcy & Chester. Need to concentrate more on ripping
balls & driving in mauls.
Under 12s
3 May OC 10 v Souths 5 - After the long, long off season the team had a
morale boosting first victory against Southern Suburbs. Everyone in the
team played well and demonstrated that, with a few more weeks of training,
they will be a threat to the rest of the competition.
10 May Onkaparinga 15 v OC 5 - Outweighed as usual, the team gave the
competition leaders a nasty shock by scoring first. And then only going
down by 15-5 (3 tries to 1) after having to play with 1 player short for
the whole of the second half. The majority of the team are new to the club
or are having their first year in under 12 rugby. At the rate they are
improving they will give Onkaparinga and even bigger shock next
round.
17 May OC 26 v Burnside 17- The local derby proved to be a significant win
for the team. Outweighed and out numbered (Burnside have combined with
Elizabeth) the team looked like it was going to be in for a long day.
While we scored first the weight of the Burnside team took its toll during
the first half. At the break we were 1 try down. However, our well
balanced pack and an increasingly well disciplined backline started to
come into its own. In conjunction with some accurate conversion kicking
(and even after a disallowed try) we emerged the winners by 9 clear
points: 4 tries (3 converted) to 3 tries (1 conversion).
24 May OC 10 v Brighton 15 - Unfortunately, the team had a few injuries
and illnesses so we could only just field the minimum nine players against
last year’s competition winners. Once again the team surprised us by
going “toe to toe” (try to try) with Brighton right up until the final
minutes when they scored the winning try. Even then the team had one last
ditch effort with a penalty, only metres from the Brighton line. Brighton
managed to hold on to win by 1 try. Even though the scoreboard shows a
loss the team proved to itself that, with its full compliment, it can add
Brighton to the list of teams that can be beaten in the next round.
Under 14s
3 May OC 0 v Brighton 24 - We started the new season with a new
combination and an overwhelming loss to a physically intimidating
Brighton. The portents were not good! But this form was reversed in
dramatic style in the next two games.
10 May Onkaparinga 0 v OC 43 - This game saw OCs journey to not so sunny
Onkaparinga. Right from the start it was a different side from the week
before with commitment and organisation, especially at the first series of
rucks where the clear out was fast and effective. The work was quickly
worked up the field for Will Sadler to cross for a try. OCs dominated from
the restart, sending the ball wide for new boy Kabil who showed a clean
pair of heels to cross out wide. With the boys on a roll, Tom and Alex
both crossed before half time to establish an unexpected 24 – 0 lead.
The expected second half Onka’s revival did not arrive and OCs continued
their domination at the break down and with tries to Tom, Kabil and Alex.
The final result was a very impressive victory.
17 May Burnside 5 v OC 24 - It looked as if it would be a tough outing
against neighbors Burnside at Parkinson Oval. It was clear from early in
the game that Burnside would try to dominate through their impressive
forwards, especially their number 8. However, aggressive defending and
belief borne from the win over Onka’s the previous week had OCs matching
Burnside up front. Having weathered the initial encounters, OCs worked the
ball wide for speed demon Kabil to cross the line for the first score of
the game. Hard work from a series of mauls and rucks gave Alex the
opportunity to score under the posts and all of a sudden it was 12 –
nil! Early in the second half, w\quick and well timed passing by the
centres along their own 22 sucked in the defense and released Kabil who
showed his pace and elusive running to leave defenders (and team mates)
stranded and scored under the posts. Although OCs scrum and lineout were
not exactly brilliant, the boys set well on Burnside’s 22 and Alex took
the chance to peel off the back of the scrum for a good blind side try.
With a commanding 24 to nil lead and a quarter of the game to run,
Burnside raised the pressure and although the defense was heroic
(especially one try saving tackle from Jack Biggs) it was inevitable that
the homeside would score, which their imposing No. 8 did. But it was all
too late. OCs ran out 24 – 5 winners. A rousing rendition of the club
song blasting from the change-rooms rounded off a great team effort.
Under 17s
3 May OC 8 v Elizabeth 13 - Scorers – Tim LePoidevan (try), Tom Collett
(field goal). The game started well with an excellent try from Tim
LePoidevan. There were some excellent runs from Oliver Greenwell, Henry
Boylan and Rob Werner. Tension erupted, and an OC player was given a 10
minute rest. Overall great game with some very hard rucks and
mauls.
