So, as it turned out my birthday wound up well after dawn in a haze of
friends, rugby and bundy.
I didn't see the league
final, but I did see the result. Bad weekend for the English! Hah!
I haven't managed to cope
with today at all well. I'm too tired to function but too over-tired to sleep. And, of course, it's been 35+ here
for a few days, so I'm perpetually
cranky and tired even before the booze.
I'm off now to stagger
aimlessly around the house for a while.

Saturday in Leeds:
I met Stewie early in the week - he was planning to get to
Edinburgh on Saturday. But then I reminded him of the
England-Wallabies match on Saturday night, followed by the Tri-Nations
League final held here at Leeds, so he went back and scored a cheap Sunday
afternoon ticket.
Drinking local Bitters during the week. Then Saturday we went to
the Aussie pub, ‘Walkabout’, about a half-hour before the Rugby at
Twickenham was due to start. It was packed then with the 'Fanatics'
who were in Leeds to support Australia later in the evening at Elland Road
stadium. We ordered some food but stuff knows where it ever got to.
It was so crowded we moved upstairs, which is like a large balcony
on three sides looking out over the crowd below and with an eye-level view
of the largest of the large screens, with monitors still scattered about
the place - it's a pub with a healthy dedication to showing continuous
sport. In the Leeds' 'Itchy Guide' to the pubs and bars of this city it's
described as the place where you need to be drunk before you get
there.
We'd both started on bundies - it's a pub where you can actually buy them.
The place was mixed English & Australians and generally good-humoured
- and the victory was sweet.
Then the Fanatics started to disperse off to various buses, coaches
and taxis to get out to Elland Road for the Final. I had a ticket, but as
it was a sell-out there was no chance of getting Stewart a ticket.
Stew said he'd stay at the Walkabout and watch it there. I grabbed some
food out at Elland Road and bought a Kangaroos scarf and found my spot up
the vertical cliff-face to the top of the C stand, with a view over the
heads of some thousands of people. Typical for Leaguies, I suppose, is
their tendency to boo anything they disapprove of – us, the Anthem, the
players. For me they reserved some deference presumably as I was the
only Aussie supporter for half a mile, where there was to be found a
contingent of Fanatics with a large Aussie flag - as it turned out,
something to be in continual use.
The place started off noisy but quickly went quiet and stayed quiet
as the Roos wacked on an average of a point a minute. After 30 years of
trying, they weren't just losing, they were getting humiliated. So, the
booing and venom then moved onto their own team and people started leaving
in droves half way through the second half. I'd ask if they were
coming back and they'd either reply 'what do you think?', shake my hand,
or ask to buy my scarf.
Stewart SMSd to say 'boring', then to say that it was getting ugly
at the Walkabout, he was getting evil looks from very big blokes with
calluses on their knuckles as he was the only one in the place in a gold
jersey. I suggested he find a friendlier environment and I'd SMS him
once I got back to Leeds. When I got out of the Stadium, and for lack of a
taxi started to walk back to the city, the Town Hall lights visible in the
distance, I caught up with three Fanatics, all from Queensland and working
down in the South of England (with everyone else who is Aussie or Kiwi).
I mentioned the mood at the Walkabout and they said that they and another
900 or so (perhaps at this point an exaggeration) were all heading back
there. So I got on to Stew and suggested he move back that way as by
this time I was at the head of a constantly growing collection of
blokes and women in gold jerseys, gold wigs and large Aussie flags who
were following the blokes who were following me getting back to the pub.
How little they know of my ability to get lost anywhere.
I met up with Stew once we got back to Cookridge
Street, the pub was rocking with gold and green, the building was swaying
to the music. There was a raised dance floor filled with women, with
men, with flags. I couldn't get another drink through the crowd so
got onto the balcony, with a replay of the Wallabies match visible on the
big screen. Part of the
balcony was being lightly barricaded off and washed to accommodate the
British Leagues team, of all people, who must have felt they'd be safer
and more welcome amongst us than amongst their own kind. The balcony
filled up, the barriers never seemed to exist and the place kept on
rocking. Stew and I ran out of money by midnight, we watched the Wallabies
win again then left the pub and worked our way through to my place.
We reminisced about victories, had a cup of tea, rang you(???), had more
tea, crashed.
I saw Stewart off to his train about 2pm - he had about two minutes
to spare but the train was 7 minutes late - he was going to get some food
before he got the train, so I'm only assuming that since I've not heard
from him, he got the train, still in his Wallabies gold jersey and large
backpack. Is he normally so nearly-late?
I've put a photo of Stew and Dan Rouse on the website. Stewie
also took a photo for Boof's sake which he'll send out and that I'm to put
on the website on Stew's behalf. We took these while going out doing
some hat-photos. Leeds isn't as amenable to that though but Holland
should be. We also found something we thought would make a good
photo to send you ....

it safe and sound to Edinburgh. Nearly missed the train but it was never
in doubt - nearly-but-not late is the way i generally seem to travel. Plane,
train or automobile, i've nearly missed it.
Am currently giving the couch a pounding at Dan Rouse's sister
Louisa's house. Later today
though i need to check into a hostel for the next two weeks.
It's cheaper than renting an apartment at this stage, due to a family
holiday in Europe (something i thought would never happen) from the 15th
to the new year. Rent here isn't as cheap as i was hoping, but a bit better
than London. Plus, it's not London.
I got a job on my first outing around the city. It's another pub,
at least it's a very stylish
bar in the west end. Very expensive drinks for people in suits who like to
waste money, if its in nice surroundings. They
have a huge cocktail list for me to learn and a bewildering array
of spirits that i have never seen before. Some nice rums and tequilas, and
some Louis XIII whiskey for only £42.50 per 25ml. No. thats not a typo.
Seems to be run by good
people who really know what they are doing, which is a nice change. The
rest of the staff seem nice and there is the obligatory
mad frenchman in the kitchen who is enjoyably volatile.
Not getting used to the cold at all. Its 5 at the moment. 5!
5 pitifull degrees. No wonder
their rugby team are sluggish, they're frozen.
Spoke to Nick Malone last night. He's just landed in London
and wondering what to make of it. I told him to make pounds. Or get very hungry.
He had the usual gripes about it. Cost of everything, weather, crowds,
generally unattractive women, crap food, etc. But still, it's a city that
everyone should have a go at living in.
Probably won't look for a rugby club till next year. At the
moment i just need to work as many hours as possible and save up a bit of
money. I'm running very low
now. A month off in the UK is costly. Especially with a
trip to Paris thrown in. Will try to get some more photos through soon. Take

I've been in nearly weekly contact with home and particularly my

I received a phone call from Brian Callaghan (Simon's father) this
morning.
It seems a boy by the name of Angus Crawford who played for the 2nd Div
this year and who had attended Pembroke School, has tragically been killed
in what seems to have been a roll-over in his car - and his sister (Maddy)
who apparently watched a few of Angus's games (maybe one or two with the
Div 1) is in hospital in a critical condition, spinal injuries and other
injuries.
Angus was a good friend of Simon's, about the same age. It happened up
north (outback) Endamurka?? not sure of the spelling! last Sunday Brian
thought.
I said that we would keep an eye out in the paper for the funeral
notice, as I'm sure there will be people who will want to attend to pay
their respects. So Sad So Young.

All is going well and we have won 3 league games and one cup game plus 3
friendlies. Played my first game straight off the plane. Friendlies went well
playing teams that were of a fairly low division. The cup game was also easily
won 101 to 6. Scored two tries and set up a few. Was a bit of a drubbing. The
league games are also going well and have scored two tries in those. We are
winning easily. Doesn't say much for the development of Scottish rugby. Am
looking forward to playing against Perthshire who have imported a Samoan
international to play no8 for them and he's my man.

OMIGOD!OMIGOD!
Lowlands and Amsterdam were un be liev ab le! I saw the Darkness, White
Stripes, Chemical Brothers, Faithless, Everlast, Zutons, Razorlight,
Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy's, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Offspring,
Bloodhound Gang, and of course The Streets.
All were brilliant, in particular Everlast, Faithless and Flogging Molly.
The turkey of the festival were The Streets. Sorrry! But Mike Skinner just
sucked a fat one. He was drunk, arrogant and the only act in the whole
festival to get booed. And his audio was terrible too, couldn't tell one
song from the next.
Amsterdam was stunning. A beautiful city full of friendly beautiful
people! Not to mention coffee shops and a liberal red light district. I
saw the Van Gogh gallery which was pretty amazing. Four square feet of oil
on canvas was worth more than Australia! Also saw some Manets and a few
Picassos. Brilliant.
I went on a canal tour which was really nice. Canals and bicycles
dominate Amsterdam. So does sex. I went to the Sex museum which was a good
laugh. I bumped into a group of Aussies working in a pub. They sold Pale
Ale and so I was in! Got well mashed and then joined them on their table
for Bingo. I won a bottle of Champagne which I won points for for sharing
with complete strangers, and also a bottle of wine which I swapped for two
Pale Ales. I stayed for a lock-in, and then they took me out to a night
club. The rest of the night is a complete blank. At least I woke up
in my hotel, with all my belongings.
So now i have a dilemma. Why on earth should I stay in London? Its
dirty, smelly, overcrowded, inconvenient and inexplicably expensive.
Amsterdam is just perfect. Actually, there is no dilemma. I'm outta here.
In three weeks I'm going to France to visit my little sister (she's
working there for 5 months) and after that I'm off like prawns in the sun.
Time to start saving...
But i will probably stay in the UK, just because of my work visa. But
I'll try to sort out one for the EU as well just to have maximum options.
But I'm hearing good things about Edinburgh and all of Ireland. So time
will tell. And hopefully it will tell me.
How's the Frocs? Should be the dominant force by now!

emailing her that link too, she'll be chuffed) and our old captain had
broken her foot off the week before. But I digress..... First I hit the
"laws" link., like I said, no I'm not the brightest and I
figured I should learn a few rules - instead of just pretending I know
what I'm doing. Unfortunately it really didn't help me much, however I did
manage to laugh loud enough to cause great distress to my fellow students
studying frantically around me. "The passion" provided another
great source of amusement for me, this time I managed to contain myself
adequately, well if not for the persistent humming that sporadically
occurred while reading the "songs" section. By now I had a small
line up of students who were waiting for a computer (to do actual work)
wandering past inquisitively and subtlety looking at what I was doing,
which to their great dismay and constant grumbling was not of their
academic standard. My first warning from one of the lecturers came when I
was laughing my gutts up at some of your team photos. (Thankfully the vast
hovering of intellects had ceased by now.) Anyhow, this is just a long
winded and procrastinating way of me wanting to congratulate the person or
persons who contribute to the site, very funny indeed, well at least it
kept me amused on and off for over four hours. However I will be
submitting the link to my lecturer on Monday in place of the paper I was
suppose to produce, ah well, it's far more entertaining anyhow. Thanks for

I appreciate your concerns. The site was, however, last updated on the
25th of July with a series of e-mails about Gavin Pfister - refer to 'Site
Updates and Changes' on the front page.
James Diack writes our match reports but has been ill.
I am, and have always been, maintaining the site but I'm now living in
England. For the news and gossip I've always been both reliant on being
physically there and reliant on getting information passed on to me.
As I'm on the other side of the planet, I miss what happens around the
bar. And if people don't wish to pass on what they're doing then I've no
idea. For instance, I'd not known you were living in Melbourne - that
would have been a news item, had I known. There may very well be rumblings
at the club that the website can't be maintained by someone living as far
away as I am. Not being there, I've no idea if that's true. Well, it can
be maintained if I get the information to put up there.
So far, I put on the site as soon as I receive it, any news I get. I
don't get any, then it's no different if I'm here or I'm there as there's
nothing to put on the site. Right now I have to wait for what news I get
from the newsletter. I then take what I can from that and put it on the
website. But I hear nothing otherwise.

Well the tension of keeping this a secret has finally broken and we
have to officially announce that Jo and myself are gong to be proud
parents around 3 November 2004. Was slightly unplanned but I cant help it
if I have heat seeking missiles. Jo is nearly 12 weeks now and the
excitement is slowly building up. We both kind of carried on with our
normal lives until
We saw the scan and that's when it brought on the excitement. It
feels unbelieveble to think that you have created a small little human.
Not much more to say other than we will keep you all informed on our
progress. The next 6 months are probably going to be one of the biggest
things to happen to Josie and myself.

A bit of rugby news for you from over here.
My 1st XV at Oxford Brookes University has made it through to the
semi-finals of the British Universities Sports Association 1st XV Shield
Competition after a hard fought 27-16 win over Stirling University in
Scotland last week.
We play Liverpool (who beat Oxford Uni last week) in Liverpool this
coming Wednesday for a place in the final.

but I will let you know how we go and hopefully have some pictures.

The Peg referred to is the better half of the Denis & Peg
HAYDEN duo who are alive and well in Malaysia.
Denis HAYDEN is still playing senior rugby with the Cobra Rugby
Club, but cannot get used to being lifted in the lineout. As some of
your readers will recall, if anyone touched "BIG DEN" in a
lineout there would be an immediate flare up. Denis thinks that
legalised lifting in the lineout these days makes it all too easy .
The photo I sent through to Kim earlier this year is of Denis
HAYDEN and myself when we met over Xmas after many years.

Caitlin goes into Grade 12 and her results to date are good. Proof there is
at least one academic in our family.
Liam goes into Grade 9 and his results are looking OK and he knows he can
do better.
I'm working my ring off and Anne still does the crazy hours at the
Pharmacy.
Brisbane is bracing for a hot one this week.

As co-author (with Butch Wright, in 1970) of the OC song, may I point out a
couple of errors?
1. "We go to training unless of course etc." not "And then of course
there's training"
2. The unfit, failing, fucked up, fighting.... (can be funked- but must have
"failing", to scan, not to mention alliterate- correctly.
I dislike pedantry but feel that the corrections are necessary, particularly
if the fat lady is about to sing! and, oh yes, it should be Oodla Wirra, one
of our ex players (whose name escapes me) once owned the BP roadhouse in that
thriving metropolis!
I came across the original MS recently. Its first performance was at the end
of season dinner 1970 at the Tower Hotel - we were subsequently banned from
further dinners at that establishment, but not, I believe due to the song!
